Data sources
Hardiness zones come from the official 2023 USDA PHZM ZIP listings (PRISM / USDA-ARS). Frost dates come from NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals 1991–2020 (32°F / 50% last spring and first fall freeze) joined to each ZIP via Census ZCTA centroids and the nearest Climate Normals station. Outdoor crop dates use frost-relative Extension catalog offsets by default, with place-backed upgrades where Extension geography is cited — currently 26 states (full or partial; see data status). Wired examples include Virginia SPES-673; NC State AG-756; Clemson HGIC; MSU P3616; MU G6201; UF/IFAS VH021; LSU Pub. 1980; Texas AgriLife (fall Regions I–V plus spring weeks-after-frost); UK ID-128; MSU LP/UP calendars; OSU Ohio; Idaho BUL 965; URI and UD statewide calendars; OSU EC 871 (Oregon); K-State MF315/MF312; UC coastal partial (California); Illinois When to Plant; ISU Iowa; ACES Alabama; OSU HLA-6004 (Oklahoma); UW A1989 (Wisconsin); UNL Nebraska; UMD Maryland; UGA C943 (Georgia); and UAEX MP422 Zone C baseline (Arkansas). USDA zone alone is never treated as a planting calendar. Partial joins, proxy frost bands, and unwired states are documented on data status and in docs/extension-crop-data-gaps.md. The small set of ZIPs without an NCEI join is labeled in the planner. Crop taxonomy uses USDA PLANTS for species identity and USDA ARS GRIN for botanical crop groups when more specific; cultivar and common packet-name aliases are search aids only, not citations. Companions follow WVU Extension (USDA NAL) with Rutgers/UMN spacing notes. Seed-start lead times and multi-week harvest ranges follow University of Minnesota Extension citations only. Confirm with your county Extension office before buying seed or committing bed space.
Bracket numbers in the planner (for example [2]) match the numbered entries below. Each entry lists when we last pulled the source and the upstream Last-Modified or page meta date when available. npm run verify:sources re-checks every URL and flags citations that may need a refresh. Frost dates are place-backed nationwide from NOAA NCEI Climate Normals joined to your ZIP. Keep-apart and harvest windows cite USDA or Cooperative Extension sources here. See data status for per-state coverage and known gaps. States still on frost-relative defaults (for example New York and Pennsylvania), ZIPs without an NCEI join, and crops without a picking-window citation are labeled as gaps in the planner.
